Here is my list of why the Flames faltered in this last season:

1. Goal-tending;

2. Puck possession;

3. Poor defensive play (which partially flows out of 2., but not everything);

4. Lack of work ethic some nights (not every night);

5. Lack of team offence.

Some of these are certainly coach issues (possession, work ethic and some of the defensive lapses are probably more coaching than player personnel issues), but some issues are obvious holes in the Flames roster that need to be addressed. They won't be easily addressed and likely not quickly.

I have great trepidation we are putting the cart before the horse here and Hartley is a casualty of it.

Yeah I disagree here.

Look at TO and Babcock. They are clearly rebuilding but he came in and wanted to establish systems. The whole premise was to teach young guys the right way to play, so that when they're done rebuilding it's second nature.

That's what I see here. I see we have at least 1 more year of a rebuild. The GM wants 'his guy' to come in and teach a different style. That gives him a year to come in, teach the guys, play 'the right way', before the pressure turns up.

I don't see it as 'rebuild over' but rather, 'that phase of the rebuild is over....time to get serious about our blueprint and how we're going to build this thing to win going forward'. A big part of that is playstyle, so you can get the bodies to fill those roles.
