Wow. I'm surprised by this move, but I'm obviously not the only one.
Enoch said it well: If you don't think Bob is your guy to start next year, don't hesitate and make the move if the season doesn't start well. That's basically ruining an entire season based on hedging your bets. Most teams don't recover after a poor start, and you can't take that risk if you think it's a distinct possibility.
I agree that Bob had a tough time adapting his game plan, but just to defend his thinking a little, when you had a good amount of success the previous season executing that game plan, it's hard to second guess the strategy in the first half of a season. However, he failed to make even small adjustments as the year went along, and the system was clearly not doing enough to support the on-ice talent.
The one thing that makes me nervous is that I'm not sure Hartley's replacement will be a massive improvement. Is it a sure thing that we hire Boudreau? A couple other teams are already interested in his services. If we go with someone like Green, is that a whole lot better? Not so sure.
However, if there's one thing I'm fairly confident in, it's the abilities of Brad Treliving. He's methodical and logical, and rarely makes decisions based out of emotion, so in that sense I trust that he fired Hartley and Co. for the right reasons. I'd like to hear what he has planned to fill the position. I'm sure he's using the same methodical process to find the right guy though.
