Yes...but it still gets slaughtered. The end result remains the same, which really seems like the important part of the discussion.
I sincerely doubt the Cow is in Bovine Heaven glaring down disapprovingly about how we tricked it with the candles and balloons and the Happy Birthday song only to wind up giving it a pneumatic piston to the brainpan.

I recall reading that humanely slaughtered cows are supposed to produce better beef because animals that aren't humanely slaughtered can release certain hormones which can negatively affect the taste. I don't know how much truth there is to that though.
