I attended the Hillsborough semi final in 1988, the year before the disaster. I was in the stands (seats) above Lepping Lane. Looking down on the fans, it was obvious that there was major crushing then too, just nobody died. I remember telling my dad that there could be major problems here. I told a steward too about my concerns. I didn't take it any further though trusting that those in charge would deal with it.
The next year, I simply couldn't bring myself to attend the 1989 semi final. I had severe misgivings even though I had followed Liverpool both home and away all season long. After witnessing what I did the previous year at the same stadium I simply couldn't do it. To this day I think about this moment in time. I know there's little to nothing that I could have done to prevent this tragedy but I think about it. What if?
Hillsborough still affects me deeply after all these years.
This day has been a long time coming. I'm both happy and just so incredibly sad for the families.
