Any reason why it needs to be wood/metal? Amazon had a few nice stone ones for inexpensive.
How about stone or glass sets? You'd have an easier time to track down a set if you open up your criteria a little.
Not sure if they always do... but Ten Thousand Villages has chess sets on occasion that aren't bad options IMO. Discovery Hut probably might have sets as they sell a lot of games.
