You don't have to register a hit or take a penalty to be a player willing to take a hit to make a play, or hold your ground in front of the net in order to get a rebound and score a goal.
It's way more of a "feel" thing than something you can look up.

Who do you "feel" is softer... Bennett or Monahan?
Monahan will take a hit to make the play and hold his ground in front of the net.
Bennett will knock the other guy over and drive him into the goalie, he will force the other guy to hook/trip or cross check him.
Bennett 110 hits 37 PIM -- Monahan 38 hits 18PIM.
In this case it just happens that the hits / PIM stat point to the way you "feel" about softness........ Unless you are going to say that Bennett is softer than Monahan..
