It is, though. The only context in which ***sucker is considered an insult is if you think it's a bad thing to be the sort of person who sucks ****s. That doing so, as a guy, is a negative attribute. So it's inherently tied up in homophobia. Pretty hard to deny. Why else would it have a negative connotation?
But nonetheless, a sense of perspective is crucial in these things... there is a sort of language policing line that needs to be carefully trodden because we really are getting to a place where someone seems to be so offended by just about anything that they start rending their garments. The best response is "yeah, when you stop and think about it, that's probably something you really should discard from your vocabulary", and move on.
