IMO, McLean was an excellent host for the HNIC broadcasts. Furthermore, he was absolutely excellent opposite of Cherry on Coach's Corner. Couldn't have had two more polar opposites if you tried, and it worked great.
I wholeheartedly agree that the Sunday broadcasts of Hometown hockey are so bad they are unwatchable. Poorly thought out, poorly executed.
Segments like Satellite Hotstove were awesome. Actual analysts discussing hockey and hockey news. Now it's replaced with Kypreos and Strombo explaining how a wrist shot works on plexiglass floor. So dumb.
After Hours was worth the price of admission. Scott Oake did an amazing job of getting interesting stories out of players and tying them into sports/hockey.
The only silver lining in this whole multi billion dollar mess is Hextall, Ball & Hrudey. Having Elliot on as an analyst helps, but even that studio pisses me off.
For the record, I'm not some crusty old man pining for the good ol' days either. I'm 29 and I just want to Make Hockey Great Again.
