Best part about the backup camera push is it was legislated to be mandatory, somehow is a looked at as a selling feature.

They're advertising it because rear view cameras are becoming standard on cars in the $20K range, and it's not mandatory until 2018 in the US and I believe still up in the air in Canada.
And the manufacturers have done great improvements in safety, one only needs to look at videos of crashes between new vehicles with old ones. While the Model S is a very safe car, there are many other cars on the market that are just as safe based on testing results in the US and Europe. And the Model S is also missing features, like rear facing radars and 360 degree cameras.
