Some people seem to think that Hartley's defensive "system" is to block shots. It's not like the message is, "Ok, we lose the puck, bust your ass back as hard as you can to surround the net and block anything and everything." It's just that he demands, that if it is the only option your left with, you have to do it. Shot blocking is obviously a last ditch effort to break up a play you allowed to happen. The system broke, and now you need to block a shot.
It's a sign of commitment to the team's success when a guy lays down to block a shot. It's a sign of lackthereof when they have a chance to and don't. So while the team maybe blocked a lot of shots, because of a lot of defensive breakdowns, there may be instances that stand out in Hartley's mind of chances to block goals that didn't happen.
