The added quality of a player like Monahan is worth what? An extra mil a year? $1.3? Every market is different with different plus/minus for everyone. If you look at a contract like Barkov's at $5.9 AAV that's a contract with no state income tax.

I don't think Monahan and Kadri are at all comparable players.
For one, Kadri is a full three years older. At this point in his career, Kadri hadn't even cracked the Leafs as a full-time player, let alone anyone of any impact. And even comparing their careers since Monahan came into the league, he's clearly on a completely different level:
Kadri: 227 GP, 55 goals, 79 assists, 134 points (0.59 PPG)
Monahan: 237 GP, 80 goals, 79 assists, 159 points (0.67 PPG)
^ Again, on a player who is four years younger and trending upwards -- not to mention doesn't have the attitude and character issues Kadri has developed.
Monahan coming in at $6.5 million would almost be a discount.
