I'd imagine that he would be very motivated in training camp. If he has anything left, we will see it in camp. If not, he can play out his contract in Stockton.
There are a few players who before camp it should be made very clear to them that they are playing for their NHL jobs. Jooris and Bouma come to mind off the top of my head.
I am not a fan of buy outs or retaining salary. Best to just tough it out with a bad contract IMO.
