The guy who is second is a 6-4 RW who has a similar shooting style to Ovechkin that can slot in and receive passes from Gaudreau all day. Laine might score 50 if he's paired with Gaudreau and I'm not exaggerating.
The #1 area of need in the system is a RW with size, and the second is a pure sniper. Laine is basically everything that the Flames need currently.
Matthews is going to likely be the better overall player, but the Flames are set up the middle if they don't get him. If they do, then the lines will be set up
Gaudreau-Monahan-(Who Knows)
Bennett-Matthews-(Who Knows)
Colborne-Backlund-Frolik
Just means that the Flames will have to go snag a RW or two through UFA, which is a shorter term fix. Laine would be a long term fix that would fit in the right age group with the other guys. Either scenario is fine, but it would work better for the make up of the team to get Laine.
If we were Vancouver or Toronto, Matthews makes infinitely more sense.
