At the end of the day, they could pretty much kill most of them with extreme prejudice except for Mon Mothma, and a couple of others.

This to me has to be about a hopeless battle. I look at it as the Empire at that point being at the top of their game. Think of them as the Japanese Imperial Navy pre Midway, when they basically won every single battle.

Then Midway came along and while the Japanese still had some naval victories, you could see that they were losing their grip on the war one finger at a time until they suffered the defeat at Guadalcanal that really ended the Japanese naval threat to the pacific.

In this case the Rogue one battle would be to me like pre midway, where the rebels are going to lose and lose horribly but they manage in a heroic act to get the plans out.

The Death Star battle to me would be like Midway where the overwhelmed rebels managed to land a massive sucker punch to the Empire who started to flail around a bit. Then the events of Empire happened, and while the Empire won they didn't crush the rebels. Then the second death star battle was Guadalcanal. The end of the offensive threat of the Empire.
