After six years street hockey is legal on Calgary streets.
Personally I think this is really good news. Playing street hockey on the street keeps kids active and keeps them out of trouble. It's low cost, can be played anytime and is a great way to make friends on your street. With so much emphasis on kids being active, I'm surprised this was ever a law. As a bonus kids can even be an eye in the community.
I played street hockey almost everyday for ten years and not once did we damage any city property or cars. The biggest damage would be from walking on someone's grass to get a stray ball. We all realized that streets are for cars and learned from the older kids that when you see a car, you stop and move your nets. If anything it allowed us to catch our breath. Respect passerby's and they'll respect your game.
Hopefully when we see the police out there they have hockey sticks instead of tickets.
