It's clear Rick has gotten cocky and underestimated Negan and the saviours, before he knew anything about them he said he would deal with them for hilltop. Yes. I said as much after he has the debate with Morgan about whether to preemptively strike them without knowing anything. I was saying that Morgan's philosophy would be proven to be wisdom in time, but I also recognize that this group was a completely different animal than anything they've dealt with before.
What's weird is that I have a feeling that the Alexandrians are going to form an alliance with the horse-riding hockey-pad group...and several others...to attack Negan and take him down. It will probably take most of the season to make it happen, and I really have no idea how it will work, but I think we see an entire season of subjugation and oppression of Rick's group, until they work out a way to get rid of Negan.
One thing I'm relatively sure of, neither Rick nor Carl was the one to get it just based on what Negan was saying right before he struck.
