That's an overly simplistic analysis because most NHL teams cannot afford to waste a roster spot on a 3rd goalie sitting on their team not playing. And he wasn't playing well when we originally sent him down. So him clearing waivers back in November or whenever means next to nothing at all. In the past we've seen players clear waivers and then get traded for a draft pick. Kris Russell was waived and then traded. Kristian Huselius was waived and then traded after.

Also your analysis is faulty because his trade value has likely increased massively since he's actually played well down the stretch and has now proven over a longer timeframe that he can play in the NHL. With his age and potential he's certainly worth something. Not qualifying him would seem like a stupid move.
