About as far as I'd be willing to tolerate is voluntarily submitting to arbitration by religious counsellors in family law. We allowed that in Canada for Christian groups and orthodox Jews for decades. I thought Muslims in Canada were treated unfairly when they applied for religious family courts and were turned down. Though IIRC, the upshot was that all the religious courts were shut down, so it was equitable in the end.
Ultimately, the issue is whether secular laws or holy texts are the ultimate authority in the land. And that's a pretty big issue.
Yes, in the U.S. conservative Christians lobby to have the laws of the land reflect the bible and conservative Christian doctrine. If they don't get their way, they elect politicians and try to change the laws. What they don't do is deny the very legitimacy of American courts and laws, and administer biblical punishment outside the purview of the law.
