I thought there were specific bonuses for rookies? Not like 'you get an extra million if you play 50 games' or anything easy like that.

Too many performance bonuses on the roster at once can handcuff you.
The NHL has a performance bonus cushion of 7.5%. This means teams can exceed the cap including performance bonuses only by 7.5% of the salary cap. Potential performance bonuses count until they are un-achievable.
It was a major reason why the Oilers had to trade Smid. Too many performance bonuses for their wonder kids handcuffed them from doing any roster changes until they dumped Smid.
