’m not going to tell you if or how that happens. But without spoiling anything, I can tell you that this is probably the darkest episode of any Star Wars cartoon I’ve ever seen. Eschewing the familiar fanfare theme, it’s scored to a lot of low, threatening rumblings, and takes place primarily on the foreboding planet of Malachor, where Jedi are forbidden to go. Dave Filoni, in a Q&A following my screening, said one of his inspirations for the episode was Dante’s Inferno – a lot of it takes place underground and has characters trying to ascend to the surface. And yes, there are deaths. Parents should know they’re visually handled discreetly, but the overall sense of doom in the story might make them frightening to the littlest ones anyway.
