The thing is once a player decides to wait it out, they will most likely just wait until all offers are in front of them.
Depends on how much they like the player and how confident they are that they can sign him I guess. You're right there's not much precedent, but for 5-10 slots I don't think it's much of a price to pay, especially with this year's draft considered to be decent at the top of the 1st but pretty poor depth wise.

If the context is that he just wants to go to an organization with less centre depth and would sign for one of any 5 teams, getting to the head of the line probably makes sense. Being able to sign him now is a bargaining advantage, he can come in to their NHL or AHL team this week and get started. It's not like he's a real UFA, his salary is going to be capped at rookie max so they'll all be the same deals with maybe some minor bonus fluctuation. Maybe he wants to burn a year, or maybe he just wants to get started with the organization and not come into training camp cold.

But like I said, I expect he'll sign with the Flames after all the organization has done for him and the support he's gotten from flames fans has been pretty noticeable on twitter over the years. I'd be pretty disappointed in him if he doesn't sign. It's not like the flames are clogged up. Monahan is set but Bennett is not a sure thing to even stay at centre yet and Backlund is a UFA in two seasons if I'm not mistaken.
