Just seems strange to burn a year on a player unless we think he's going to be ready to play NHL level next year?

We could get him to sign a professional contract that starts accruing next season, and sign a tryout to get some professional games in. I believe that's what we did to Kenny Morrison. It saves one year of ELC. Whereas if we signed him to his ELC right away and had him play a game, it'll burn 1 year off.
For what it's worth though I think we take the Johnny route and give him an NHL game or two.
