Sometimes, yes. An assist is not supposed to be given out merely for touching the puck on a play that eventually leads to a goal – but we all know that this happens. In some buildings it happens routinely. The official scorers up in Edmonton used to be notorious for giving out two assists on every goal that they possibly could, whether or not the players who touched the puck made any contribution to the scoring play.
