You draft one and sign the other.
That's the timeline the flames are looking at if they want to be successful with Monahan and Gaudreau in their prime years.
Jokipakka and Hamilton acquisitions have somewhat reduced the need to draft a defender with this year's high pick. What is painfully obvious is that the Flames are desperate for top 6 scoring on the wing and at centre, so it makes sense to pick a forward this year and hope that player walks into the lineup on the second line. You balance out that cap hit by signing a first line player in free agency to play on the 1st line.
Draft a player with your top 10 pick, sign Lucic in the off season and you basically have a re-made forward lineup.
