IMO clubs are better options for defense. Sharp objects can be dropped and someone could accidentally seriously injure themselves on them without much help.
If anything, clubs are more menacing. I've owned Katanas and swords and even heard hilarious stories about guys chasing thieves out of their home with a replica Zelda Mastersword. But when my friend asked the real question, "What do you do if they call your bluff? Actually stab the guy?" I realized how dumb a sword is for protection and now consider items like a child's t-ball bat, sawed down dowel etc. a better option as I wouldn't hesitate swinging that at a thief's torso/legs as it would hurt but less likely cause irreversible damage vs swinging a sword at them.
A gun or BB guns that shoot metal is in the same realm as a knife IMO, but I would consider air soft guns reasonable for defending ones self.
A hilariously odd but seemingly effective weapon in theory if you're in a pinch seems to be a power bar. Half club, half whip. However, it doesn't scream, "This guy isn't screwing around like a legit bat or a bottle or wine or something like that."
The actual proper answer is probably to scream, "I've called the cops, GTFO!" rather than engage the thief though.
