I agree, I think he's really suited for centre. But if luck hands you a potentially franchise or even generational centre (Matthews) you're obviously going to take him. And in that scenario you may start Matthews on the 3rd line but you're not going to keep Bennett, Monahan or Matthews as your 3rd line centre IMO, you'd have to move one of them to the wing and I think Bennett's feistiness and board play have him as the best winger of those 3. Anyways it was just a theoretical discussion about an improbable scenario.
In the grand scheme of things it's fairly likely we won't pick 1st. Given that four of my top six players for this draft are wingers, it seems like there's a good chance we'll be adding an elite winger talent this year. Makes a lot of sense as I think we're in fantastic shape with Bennett, Monahan and Backlund as our top 3 centres going forward (with Jankowski still in reserve). We're in reasonable shape on the blue line without adding a top talent but would be set if we did draft or trade for another top 3 defenseman. Given the lack of surefire wingers in the system it really makes a ton of sense for us to draft one this year. It may even be priority enough that they would deal up to try and get one of their favourite ones.
