I think you're overstating things. Wideman appeared to attack a ref, media got on it, he was suspended for 20 game. To the vast vast majority of people that was it. It's the NHLPA appealing the process afterall.
Outside of Calgary and a few hardcore hockey fans, the 'public' doesn't care. Some people are interested in the NHLPA's argument about concussions as it relates to a much bigger issue currently going on with the concussion lawsuit. But for most hockey fans, no one cares about a hockey player who attacked a ref and his union blaming it on concussion symptoms making him non-responsible for his actions.
