Honestly, yeah me too. Was trying to understand why he was totally passed over the first time and had to wait until round six the second time and I think I have some sort of justification.
The first time around, when he was 17 in 2013-2014 make sense. It was his first year in the OHL and only putting up okay numbers. 51 points in 68 games for an undersized player doesn't scream NHL player. He goes out destroys the previous seasons point totals, doubling them up in the same number of games. Second draft were teams still not convinced and maybe a little leery about such high numbers? Not big enough of a sample size - one season - to go on? Some scouting services had him going in the 4th round, flames get him in the 6th.
So I'd have to guess there was some risk involved, not knowing enough history at that level, wanting to see more in the OHL, if he could keep that scoring up etc. Andrew was one of three Barrie Colts to put up 100+ points last year etc.
This season Mangianpane is one of two Colts with high numbers, the other could have played in the AHL this year, 19 year old with a December birthdate, Kevin Labanc. Labanc is a Sharks draft pick who was just signed yesterday.
Anyways, some wild speculation on my part here, but I'm starting to come around to the guy because when you watched him you're always impressed. Obviously his first pro season will be interesting to watch but that's not a spellbounding notion.
