This is exactly what I said in my post that you originally quoted. If it wasn't for his trade value, I suspect Yzerman would tell him to pound sand.
Of course they want to maximize their return for him, and thus its prudent to play him. Which is why I and others, suggest that dressing him but not playing him, at least for a game, may send the desired message to him. Maybe not. But it's not rooted in pettiness. It's rooted in maintaining a team dynamic, something which Drouin has shown he has no interest in.
