The difference is the NHL is way better now than right in the middle of expansion. Back then there was like 8-10 bad teams. Right now there's one really bad roster (TOR), one pretty unbalanced one (EDM) and then the rest of the league has a decent amount of talent IMO.
In my time of watching hockey this is the deepest the league has been in terms of the talent and the best the league has been overall. Not many free wins in today's NHL. As gloomy as some of you may be right now we're only a couple pieces from being a playoff contender, that's how tight the league is.

I agree this team isn't nearly as bad, which is why I find this so shocking. We are only a couple pieces away from being a perennial playoff team, but everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong this year. I've never seen anything like it tbh, and I've been watching hockey for 25 years. I'm not worried about the future at all, but this season has been something else.
