It's beginning to sound like Smid might not play again, in which case he spends next year on LTIR and then retires. In that case, his cap hit is moot and trading him isn't even an option.
While there are no slam-dunk D prospects ready in the system, there are some OK options in Wotherspoon, Kulak, and (if they bring him back) Nakladal. If Wotherspoon can find the chemistry he once showed with Hamilton, that could be a passable second pairing:
Brodie – Giordano
Wotherspoon – Hamilton
Jokipakka – Engelland
Kulak/Nakladal
Could get by with that.
