What's lousy about it? It's an asset. Before we knew what the trade was I speculated Jones for a late round pick, that was his value.
Sounds like this boils down to you not liking late round picks more than anything.
Why keep Jones? They decided they didn't want to re-sign him. It's better to give a chance to Hathaway, Agostino, Hamilton, Poirier, Shinkaruk, etc and see if any of them can develop and win a spot for next year.
We get an open roster spot to audition players and get another roll of the dice at a prospect. Doesn't matter if its a longshot, still a win-win trade isn't it?
