I understand the Leafs position here if they don't see any way for him to help them this year or moving forward. If he was to get injured it would cost them a chance to buy him out.
It's a business and this is nothing but a business decision, albeit an odd one for sure.

I hear what you're saying but I think not playing for the last 20 games will hurt his ability to get a contract for next year. It seems like such a cold move for a team that doesn't even need the cap space for next year.
