Considering Gillies burned a year without ever dressing for a game, I don't think the Flames' season needs to be active to burn a year. I think it only depends on the date the ELC is set to "begin".

We've burned contract years on pretty much all prospects in their rookie year. Agostino, Arnold, Gaudreau, Gillies. I see no reason they wouldn't burn a year on Jankowski, unless they just can't because the Friars go too deep because Jankowski is just too dominant. The only guy they didn't burn a contract year on, was Kenney Morrison, and that's mostly because he's a total work in progress.
