Reading that article gives me a different take on the man. He was put in a terrible situation and tried to help the economy. The thing I remember the most though has to do with this.

IIRC it wasn't just any golf course and it didn't happen only once but when a crises occurred, he'd be found on a golf course in Palm Springs while promising to return shortly. Maybe just bad luck all around with the bad economy and his ill timed golf excursions.
