I know some of the spouses from NHL and ex-NHL players and they are aware of the realities of sports but there are lines that are crossed when you involve them and their personal safety.

Oh, I'm not saying you can't criticise players about how they played. That's exactly what we should do.
I'm saying its garbage when you criticise their family members for not being objective enough to expect some of the things said, or that their family members must have a lowered mental capacity to be surprised by harsh criticisms.
I think that's embarrassing. No true fan stands behind narratives like that or starts talking about a player's family in a derogatory fashion.
