This seems pretty risky as well, bringing an unknown factor into your camp. Who knows if anyone else is with him? Or if he's able to infer where he is while imprisoned.
Leaving him loosely tied up on the road seemed like a safe idea. Leave the knots loose enough to buy some time for Rick and Daryl to drive away. Who knew that he was wily enough to get out of those ropes as quickly as he did? Maybe after he kung-fu'ed the both of them they should have realized, but meh, live and learn I guess.
