Keep in mind, we aren't picky people and usually slum it when we travel, but this place exceeded our expectations. It's a massive resort of 3000 rooms but because it's so big, it was never crowded anywhere. I haven't been to the Pacific Coast of Mexico mainly because I hear the water is so much nicer on the Riveria, and that is a huge factor for us. At Barcelo, you could just wade out in the sand, or you could walk a little further down and find a reef-y area with lots of fish and several sea turtles. Like everywhere we went last year, it was crystal clear and very warm.
We paid $1500/week booking 8 days in advance. 3 days after we booked, it was $1218. If you booked today for Sunday, it costs $2100 so I have no idea how the pricing works. We would definitely go back.

Yup, Barcelo and Riu Palace are both great resort chains in the Riviera. Stayed at both. Barcelo has a way better beach and somewhat better pools, but Riu Palace is so close to Playa Del Carmen so it makes for a hard decision.
