After doing a 3 week road trip of the Yucatan/Maya last year, we were lazy this time and just got back yesterday from the Barcelo Maya in the Riviera.
Keep in mind, we aren't picky people and usually slum it when we travel, but this place exceeded our expectations. It's a massive resort of 3000 rooms but because it's so big, it was never crowded anywhere. There was a ton of activities and even had a mall (more of a gimmick) with a casino and a big 24 hour sports bar. The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. Every inch of the resort was incredibly clean and manicured.
I haven't been to the Pacific Coast of Mexico mainly because I hear the water is so much nicer on the Riveria, and that is a huge factor for us. At Barcelo, you could just wade out in the sand, or you could walk a little further down and find a reef-y area with lots of fish and several sea turtles. Like everywhere we went last year, it was crystal clear and very warm.
We paid $1500/week booking 8 days in advance. 3 days after we booked, it was $1218. If you booked today for Sunday, it costs $2100 so I have no idea how the pricing works. We would definitely go back.
