Probably just depends what you're looking for. Only 2 places I've been in Mexico is Cabo and the Mayan, and I much preferred the Mayan. But I'm a big history/culture nerd and had never seen Mayan ruins, so hence why I leaned that way.
I just found Cabo too Americanized, driving through the town, I almost felt like I was in California or something. But again, it's all about what kind of vacation you're looking for. If you're just looking to chill on the resort and also do some shopping, I can see why that area would be a good fit. You're right, they do hock a lot of cheap stuff on the Mayan, especially if you're not into Mayan artifacts.
