I believe the real reason is that nobody in the rest of the AHL wants to play road games in California because of the travel expense. As it is, the Heat are playing 48 games against the other four California teams. If they played as many games as the other AHL clubs, that would have to go up to 56. Likely they figure they just couldn't sell that many tickets to see the same few teams over and over.
