It's not the first time that'll happen and it won't certainly be the last. Again, why compete with the few teams that will vie for a players services if the cost to sign and trade a player is a 3rd round pick in a weak draft.

And you only do that if there is a high caliber player about to hit free agency. When was the last time that a non-playoff team traded for a player like that at the trade deadline? Has it ever happened? Those deals happen a week or less before free agency hits, not at the deadline.
