He shouldn't have reached in, it was a mental error to do so, you can't do that if you're fighting for ice time.
He does practice, so more ice isn't the only way he will learn. He can also watch film and learn from his positioning errors.
Honestly I'm not too sure what people expect to see from a 6-7 dman who hasn't played in the NHL? He is getting some ice today, but in a close game when you make a mental error like that it will not give the coach confidence.
