I saw this too, its as if he played better because the game was on the line and he had to be quick, where as, when he starts games he seems almost too laid back. He may feel more comfortable with the laid back style but when he gets thrown out there he has to "react" to situations. Being laid back can have it's advantages, but I think it can go the other way as well since the "mind", somewhat sluggish may not react to the speed of certain plays on time. How many times have we seen him throw his head back like he just got beat by a shot he wasn't ready for.

Kippers style was the opposite he was relaxed as a person but when it was game time, he was more intense, prepared and reacted quicker. For all the games Kipper played during a season it was amazing how intense and focused he was.
