For everything that is said and thought of Phaneuf, I can appreciate how far he has come in how he carries himself. This interview with Friedman gives an example of how he has matured as a person since his time with the Flames.

I will be the first person to admit I was completely enamoured by him when he was drafted and entered the league, only to have that shine wear off with his off ice attitude and overrated game. If he were a 5 million dollar defenceman, I think most would be a lot less hard on him now, as it would probably slot him in as a 3/4 defenceman, and not the 1/2 that the Leafs were playing him.
