At the time, the league was at crossroads as far as superstars go. Trottier was a big name but the way the original poster put it was a bit over the top. Guys like Perreault, Bossy, Dionne and Lafleur (who was getting older, and pretty much done as super star by 1981) were the big names. Trottier was pretty notable back then and would stand out more if not for Gretzky IMO. Maybe that's what he was getting at? He had over 1000 points in his first 10 seasons, all while being arguably the best 2 way center in the league.
