If the Flames don't trade Russell, it would be a huge missed opportunity. His perceived value versus his actual value might be at record levels right now.
Russell is a possession black hole (thanks Street Pharmacist for the graph), but he got the brilliant idea to use that to his advantage and turn himself into a shot blocking machine. I think he actually backs up way more than he needs on rushes, just to drive his shot blocks. This has somehow created demand for him, despite his underlying numbers.
I think Kent Wilson said this but "blocking shots are like catching mice in traps, its better than the current alternative, but suggests an underlying problem". The underlying problem - Russell is poor possession wise and gives up way more shots and chance when he's on the ice vs not on the ice.
I seriously hope we don't resign him, almost regardless of the price.
