I don't think he was signed for depth insurance. I think the Flames wanted to see what he can do. We have Aaron Johnson for depth insurance and seven NHLers on one-way contracts, none of which are really a bargain.
Having said that, I'm curious about Nakladl but it's not like he has amazing stats or there's a huge expectation that he'll be a game-breaker. Aaron Johnson has better stats. People have been upset Smid is sitting. Engelland has been steady if not spectacular. I think he'll get his chance once it becomes even clearer that the Flames won't be making the playoffs but it's reasonable to let him sit for the time being.
