Why wouldn't they sign a veteran like Corey Potter for depth insurance instead of a guy they scouted from the other side of the world who's never played a game in this league?

Well, on paper the Flames should have had more opportunity for him as we've got a worse roster especially at top 6 forward. But the Blackhawks told hm he'd be playing with Patrick Kane (which he has, since day one) while we likely told him he could rot on our AHL squad and maybe get called up someday.
