My understanding was that it hit the back of the neck (a la Langkow) where the neck guard is just a piece of Velcro.

In my ideal world, shoulder pads would have a small neck cuff, like a mini turtleneck, to protect the neck from skates and other hard impacts. Not exactly the coolest looking, and would need to be designed to not restrict motion, but I feel like there's room to improve on neck protection.
